Statement on the Situation in Sudan

April 15, 2023 • By Sami Ahmed

The International Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistance (International IDEA) is deeply concerned about the recent developments in Sudan and particularly today’s eruption of violent fighting between Sudanese Armed Forces and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces in the capital Khartoum and other cities.

As key partners of Sudan and Sudanese people, we strongly urge the leadership of the Sudanese Armed Forces and the Rapid Support Forces to immediately cease hostilities, exercise maximum restraint and prioritize the well-being and safety of the Sudanese people and immediately put a stop to any attacks. It is vital that all parties involved work towards finding peaceful solutions to address any contentious issues within the framework of the trilateral negotiation mechanism led by the UN, AU and IGAD. A quickened conclusion of negotiation towards a comprehensive peace deal that facilitates the creation of a credible civilian administration - is imperative for the country’s stability and democratic transition.
